What parts and components are in a Worcester combi boiler?

Worcester boilers are among some of the most popular brands of heating system in the UK. On top of this, most boiler systems fitted within the last decade are likely to be combi boilers due to their efficiency. As a result, knowing what parts contribute to the function of a Worcester combi boiler can be useful for many homeowners and renters across the UK.

    What is a combi boiler?

Short for ‘combination boiler’, a combi boiler is a unit that provides both central heating and hot water to a property. Where traditional boilers use separate hot water tanks for these purposes, a combi boiler uses water directly from the mains supply. This allows the unit to take up less space within the property. Key parts within combi boilers therefore include a diverter valve, which is responsible for directing hot water to either outlets (taps, shower heads etc) or the central heating system.

Combi boilers are also efficient in how they provide heating, as hot water is only provided when it is needed. The water is heated and supplied quickly when the central heating system is activated, removing the need to reheat water that isn’t being used. This means combi boilers are often more cost effective than older models.

Parts and components found in a Worcester combi boiler

Although there may be some unique parts depending on the exact model of Worcester combi boiler, as well as how it’s connected within the property, the following are some of the most common:

    • Air pressure switches: these switches make sure air and harmful gases are released from the unit.
    • Expansion vessel: responsible for maintaining steady pressure within the boiler.
    • Boiler fan: helps regulate temperature and extract gases from the boiler and the property.
    • Gas valve: controls the flow of fuel to the burner.
    • Printed Circuit Board (PCB): the ‘central nervous system’ of the boiler, controlling manual and automatic commands as well as monitoring conditions. The PCB is linked to all other electrical components within the boiler, including the display.
    • Diverter valve: controls where hot water is sent throughout the home.
    • Heat exchanger: allows the transfer of heat from the gases within the boiler to the water.
    • Pipework: combi boilers feature the following pipes – flue, condensate, flow, return, mains supply, gas supply.

If any of the above parts become defective, you should seek quality boiler spares and contact a Gas Safe engineer for installation.
